"In
the U.S., screening for mental health issues in primary care has been
enthusiastically embraced over the last decade, although it is not
recommended in other countries, such as
Canada and the U.K. Using depression as a case example, we argue that
the unexamined assumptions and unintended consequences of
questionnaire-based screening warrant more careful consideration. In
light of the lack of clinical trial evidence that screening improves
mental health outcomes, screening may inadvertently become a driver of
overdiagnosis and overtreatment and take limited resources away from
those who need it most."
